A Student Affairs Event Planner’s Prayer

Dear Sweet Baby Jesus,

As Physical Facilities spends their day toiling in the muggy heat with annoying little flying bugs swarming in the damp grass, I pray that you give them strength to finish their task and patience to deal with me and my exactly-planned-out map of where every single table should go. All 350 of them.

And Dear 8 pounds 6 ounces… newborn infant Jesus, don’t even know a word yet – I pray that as these tables and chairs sit out in the open overnight, that no students decide that they suddenly need a beer pong table and steal one – leaving me one table short and one customer angry.

I pray for good weather and I pray that everyone get the electricity they need, that they all find parking and locate their spot. Their spot. Not the one that they may want to trade for – but their actual location that I assigned them.

I pray that local media come to cover the event and not any current controversies, in essence, using my event to get to the students. I pray everyone lets these students enjoy their first weekend on campus without harassment.

Lastly, Dear Lord baby Jesus, lyin’ there in your ghost manger, just lookin’ at your Baby Einstein developmental videos, learnin’ ’bout shapes and colors – I pray that you help these students to find a home. To find a new student organization to be a part of. To feel that they can absolutely fit in at Binghamton University. To see the possibilities in continuing their education. To start this weekend on a path of success and to feel empowered, ready to face the semester. I pray that they know that there are those of on us campus that are cheering them on, pushing them, challenging them, developing and maximizing them.

Thank you in advance, and thank you for Will Ferrell [Ricky Bobby] who inspired this post.
